Golden Globes offers stories behind scenes

Chelsea J. Carter Associated Press

You saw the show. You heard the speeches. Now we tell you what you didn’t see – backstage and in the bathrooms of the Golden Globes:

•Who carries $220 in their pocket? Answer: Joaquin Phoenix, who lost a bet to the husband of his “Walk The Line” co-star, Reese Witherspoon.

Ryan Phillipe “bet me that I would win. I said, ‘No way,’ ” Phoenix explained after winning the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy or musical.

“I bet him what I had in my pocket.”

•Rachel Weisz and Gwyneth Paltrow compared their expanding bellies in the bathroom.

Weisz, who is five months pregnant, and Paltrow, who recently confirmed she is pregnant with her second child, sported dresses that showed off their bellies.

“I had to find one that would allow me to grow in all areas,” Weisz said of her gold Donna Karan crepe gown.

•Jonathan Rhys Meyers is going to be a father. Well, in his next movie, anyway.

“Isn’t that terrible? I’m 28 years old and I’m playing somebody’s daddy,” he said.

•S. Epatha Merkerson is 53 and accepting aging gracefully – well, sort of.

“I did my breasts. I won’t do my face,” Merkerson joked backstage.

She got serious, though, after winning the Globe for best actress in a television movie. Crying backstage, she said winning the award on Martin Luther King Day was an honor.

Of the civil rights leader’s work, she said, “It allowed me to stand up in front of you today.”

•Felicity Huffman’s was stepped on. So was Rachel Weisz’s.

Their dresses, that is.

Huffman, who was wearing a white gown with a train, said it was part of the award show price.

How many times was Weisz’s train stepped on? Too many to count, she said.

“My dress is hanging down. I stepped on my dress. I’m a mess,” added Reese Witherspoon, who appeared to be a bit flustered after winning the Globe for best actress in a motion picture musical or comedy for “Walk The Line.”

Witherspoon said she was enjoying the show sitting next to Shirley MacLaine.

“She knows everything about everybody,” Witherspoon said.

•So you’ve just won a Golden Globe. What are you going to do next?

If you’re Joaquin Phoenix, you’re going to tease the media.

“How long does this go on? Is it boring back here?” he asked reporters interviewing him after he won his Globe.

After enduring about 10 minutes of questions, he was hustled off the stage for a picture with co-star Witherspoon.

“He’s coming back,” a Golden Globes coordinator told reporters.

“Well, he’s not,” said Phoenix, waving to everyone as he left.

And true to his word, he didn’t.
