OSU point guard Hurd out of action

Associated Press

PORTLAND – Oregon State point guard Lamar Hurd has a groin strain and will not play this week at No. 10 Washington and Washington State.

Hurd hurt himself in Saturday’s overtime loss to Arizona State.

“It’s bad right now, and I can’t do much more than a moderate walk,” Hurd said. … “I’m trying to be optimistic. We’ve been playing good basketball and it’s going to be hard not to be a part of that. I felt like I was playing well and getting better.”

OSU (9-7, 2-3 Pacific-10 Conference) visits the Huskies on Thursday and the Cougars on Saturday. Hurd is considered doubtful for next week’s home games against USC and UCLA.

Hurd, a senior, is averaging 6.1 points, three rebounds and 2.8 assists. Senior Jason Fontenet will replace him in the starting lineup.

“I feel bad for him,” coach Jay John said in a statement. “He won’t be able to come back until he’s completely 100 percent, because with this type of injury you have to be extra cautious.”

John said sophomore Wesley Washington and freshman walk-on Brett Casey may also see additional playing time.
