Drum ensemble at Panida

The Spokesman-Review

Japanese drumming from San Francisco comes to Sandpoint on Friday when the Somei Yoshino Taiko Ensemble performs at the Panida Theater.

Taiko – the Japanese word for drum – is a form of martial arts involving rhythm, movement and philosophy. In Japan, it was traditionally used everywhere from battlefields to religious festivals.

The Somei Yoshino Taiko Ensemble, founded in San Francisco in 1999 and named after a type of cherry tree, combines traditional taiko with contemporary choreography in a colorful, fast-paced show.

Friday’s concert begins at 8 p.m. at the Panida. Tickets are $17.50 for adults ($14 for Pend Oreille Arts Council members), $8.50 for youths 18 and under; for information, call (208) 263-6139.
