Five set records at WSU Indoor
It was a record day in Pullman.
Five women, three from Washington State, broke meet records Saturday at the fourth annual WSU Indoor Open Track & Field Meet.
Washington State All-American Diana Pickler reached an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and set a personal record with a high jump of 5 feet, 10 inches – a meet record. Teammates Julie Pickler and Robin Mikesh took second and third, respectively, both clearing 5-7.
WSU freshman Sara Trane and Catie Schuetzle, a Shadle Park grad, also set meet records. Trane won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 13.30 seconds. Schuetzle won the long jump at 19-0 3/4 .
Former Idaho Vandal and Canadian Olympic team member Angela Whyte broke her meet record in the 60 hurdles – twice. Whyte finished in 8.19 seconds in the prelims and ran an 8.22 in the final, both beating her 2003 record of 8.28.
Katie Hummell, a junior from Central Washington, set the meet record in the 3,000, finishing in 10:16.86.
Another WSU All-American, Tamara Diles, reached an NCAA qualifying mark of 13-1 1/2 in the pole vault.
On the men’s side, Idaho’s Russ Winger won the men’s shot put with an NCAA qualifying throw of 59-9 1/2 .
Wrestling
Jeff Hedges took first place in his weight class as North Idaho placed eight wrestlers at the Clackamas Open in Oregon City, Ore.
Hedges won all four of his matches to take the 125-pound class.
Also placing for the Cardinals were Cody Nicholson and Josh Manes, both at 133. Nicholson finished the day 3-1 and Manes 2-2 as Nicholson beat Manes 1-0 in the third/fourth-place match.
Henirich Barnes provided NIC with its only second-place finish, finishing 3-1 to take second at 141.
Coby Jones finished 3-2 to take fourth place at 149, while Josh Erickson also finished 3-2, taking fourth at 165.
Kyle Sand took fourth after a 3-2 finish at 197, while Robby Shaw finished 5-1 to take third in the heavyweight division.
