KXLY-4 makes room for UPN
UPN has found a new home in Spokane: KXLY-4. But you’ll have to stay up late to catch its UPN broadcasts, at least for the time being.
KXLY and its affiliated digital channel, KXLY-DT, began airing UPN’s prime-time shows earlier this month in the wee hours of Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings.
Anybody for “Veronica Mars” at 2:05 a.m.?
That’s better than nothing, especially if you have a TiVo or a VCR.
However, KXLY plans to launch a new station (both analog and digital) which will air those shows in prime time and serve as the market’s UPN affiliate.
Kirstin Votava, KXLY’s TV marketing and promotions manager, said that launch “will be in the near future,” but the exact date is still up in the air.
Meanwhile, here’s the KXLY schedule for the most popular UPN shows:
•”Veronica Mars”: Mondays at 2:05 a.m.
•”Everybody Hates Chris”: Sundays at 2:05 a.m.
•”WWE Smackdown” (aka “Friday Night Smackdown”): Sundays at 12:05 a.m.
All of the other UPN shows are also airing in the early morning hours of Saturday, Sunday and Monday. (You might prefer to think of it instead as late Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday night.)
For the complete schedule, check your listings or go to the KXLY.com website and click on the link that says “UPN schedule.”
This situation came about because Spokane’s former UPN affiliate, KQUP-24, dropped its UPN programming as of Jan. 1.
Comedy on stage
We have a couple of developments to report on the live comedy front:
•The West Coast Funnies with Lamont Ferguson arrives at The Met on Saturday at 8 p.m. This is a combination sketch comedy show and stand-up act, hosted in a “Tonight Show” format.
Ferguson is a nationally known San Diego comic and the winner of the 2005 Seattle Comedy Competition. Tickets are $15 and $20.
•Ron White, of Blue Collar Comedy fame, has added a second show to his “You Can’t Fix Stupid Tour” at the Spokane Opera House. White will now have shows at 7:30 and 10 p.m. on March 25. Tickets are $38.75.
Tickets for both shows are available through TicketsWest outlets (325-SEAT, 800-325-SEAT, www.ticketswest.com).
Come hear the music play
Mark Cotter, the New York cabaret artist who has developed a loyal following around these parts, will return to the Davenport Hotel for a Valentine’s Day Dinner Cabaret, 7 p.m. on Feb. 14. Tickets are $65 per person and include dinner. Call 789-6808 for tickets.
Also, I highly recommend Spokane’s own talented cabaret artist, Abbey Crawford, whose six-part monthly cabaret series continues Feb. 24 and 25 with “Love, Luck & Lollipops,” an original show at 7:30 p.m. in the Firth J. Chew Studio at the Spokane Civic Theatre.
Tickets are $12, available by calling (509) 218-9732, by e-mail at tickets@abbeycrawford.com, or at the door.
Patty Duke tickets
If you want tickets to the recently announced Patty Duke appearance at the Actor’s Repertory Theatre in Spokane next November, here are a few options.
•You can call now for subscriptions to ARt’s 2006-2007 season.
•If you are already a subscriber, you can get extra single tickets beginning on April 24.
•Group sales, for groups of 16 or more, will be available on Aug. 1.
•Single tickets for the general public go on sale on Sept. 25.
Call ARt at 838-4013 to discuss any of these options. Duke will play the lead in an original holiday comedy titled “Together Again for the First Time.”
Sandpoint makeover
Don’t forget: The Sandpoint-filmed episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” airs tonight at 8 on KXLY-4.
The show will be preceded by KXLY’s own making-of documentary, “Behind the Scenes: A Makeover in Sandpoint,” at 7 p.m.
Baby got Bach
A reminder: The 28th Annual Northwest Bach Festival gets under way next Sunday at 3 p.m., with a program called “Baroque Strings” in the Davenport Hotel’s Marie Antoinette Ballroom.
Events continue at the Davenport and various other venues through Feb. 11. This is an important regional cultural event and a godsend for anyone with an interest in classical music.
