CdA Symphony performing family concert at NIC

The Spokesman-Review

The Coeur d’Alene Symphony will perform a special family concert on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in North Idaho College’s Schuler Auditorium.

Featured on the program are Benjamin Britten’s “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” and Gustav Holst’s “The Planets.”

Britten wrote “Young Person’s Guide” in 1946 as an accompaniment to an educational film produced by the British government about the various sections of an orchestra. Virginia Tinsley Johnson, an English professor at NIC, will narrate Saturday’s performance.

Holst’s fascination with astrology led him to compose “The Planets,” which has a movement themed to each planet in the solar system.

Children and youths up to age 18 will be admitted free; tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, through TicketsWest outlets (325-SEAT, 800-325-SEAT, www.ticketswest.com).

PLU orchestra at St. John’s

The Pacific Lutheran University Symphony Orchestra will give a free concert Sunday at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Ave.

The concert, part of the orchestra’s annual Northwest tour, will include Mozart’s 10th Symphony in honor of the 250th anniversary of the composer’s birth.

Also included in the program will be works by Albinoni, Benda, Mahler, Debussy, Strauss, Milhaud and contemporary Missoula composer David Maslanka.
