Bumpus back in good graces
PULLMAN – Washington State University wide receiver Michael Bumpus has been allowed to enroll for spring semester classes.
Bumpus had been disqualified for an academic year because of poor grades, but a review of his case that took nearly three weeks ended with the sophomore gaining re-admittance.
In a statement, WSU officials said Bumpus, an honorable mention All-Pacific-10 Conference performer at wideout and punt returner last season, had gone through the same process as all other students in a similar situation.
Said head coach Bill Doba: “He is eligible to participate in all football-related activities this spring once enrolled, including spring practice. Right now we are focusing on his academic performance this spring and his progress toward a degree from WSU to insure he is eligible in the fall.”
Multiple sources in the athletic department have said that Bumpus’ appeal hinged on getting a class from the fall semester dropped. In doing so, he pushed his grade point average high enough to meet WSU – and NCAA – standards. Earlier this month, Doba had said that Bumpus was auditing classes in case the appeal came back in his favor, classes in which he can now enter officially.
