Hot rods to heat up Post Falls

J.J. Marks, left, signals Tom Marks to stop on the display carpet Thursday at the Greyhound Park and Event Center in Post Falls, where their 1969 Camaro Z-28 will be exhibited at the River City Rod Run starting today. The Marks family just completed a nine-month restoration of the car, and the Rod Run will be its first show.

Hot rods and cool boats will be on display in North Idaho this weekend.

More than 1,000 hot rods and motorcycles – and thousands of people who love them – will gather in Post Falls for the River City Rod Run. Up the road in Sandpoint, the annual wooden boat show will draw crowds to the boardwalk and marina.

Highlights of the events include contests, games and concerts for people of all ages.

The ninth annual River City Rod Run begins today at 4 p.m. It kicks off a jampacked weekend that includes a flame-throwing contest and a performance by the rock band John Kay and Steppenwolf, responsible for such hits as “Born to be Wild” and “Magic Carpet Ride,” both released in 1968.

Sponsored by the Hot Rod Café in Post Falls, the event runs from 4 p.m. until midnight, 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in Greyhound Park. Concerts, children’s games and other activities are scheduled each day. A fireworks show will conclude Saturday’s festivities.

Hot rod judging will take place Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with best of show awards scheduled for 3 p.m.

Admission today and Saturday is $25 for adults, $10 on Sunday. Admission after 7 p.m. Saturday is $30. Children 6 and under get in free all weekend, and children ages 7 to 12 pay $5 a day. A weekend pass is $50. Those just wanting to check out the hot rods can pay $10 for a pass, good from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

More than 50 boats and thousands of spectators are expected to flood the Sandpoint city boardwalk and marina this weekend for the wooden boat show, sponsored by the Inland Empire Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society. The show runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. A number of other activities are planned throughout the weekend. A sand-sculpting competition begins Saturday at 9 a.m., and a farmers market in Farin Park runs from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

A parade of wooden boats is slated for 3 p.m. on Sand Creek, and Kathy Colton and the Reluctants are scheduled to play from noon to 2 p.m. at Park Place. A treasure hunt through downtown and a dunk tank are also on Saturday.

A fireworks show will conclude Saturday’s events. The boat show and a performance by Carl Rey and The Blues Gators from 2 to 4 p.m. are the only activities scheduled for Sunday.

Admission is free.
