Yankees 10, Indians 4: At Cleveland, Jason Giambi and Derek Jeter both drove in three and Randy Johnson struck out five and retired his first 12 batters, leading New York over Cleveland, splitting the four-game series.
Red Sox 12, Devil Rays 5: At St. Petersburg, Fla., David Ortiz hit his A.L.-leading 28th and 29th home runs, the latter a ninth-inning grand slam that broke open a close game and helped Boston avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of Tampa Bay. Manny Ramirez and Doug Mirabelli also went deep for the Red Sox.
White Sox 11, Orioles 8: At Chicago, Jim Thome hit two homers, including a grand slam in the third, matching his career high with six RBIs. Chicago also got back-to-back homers from Jermaine Dye and A.J. Pierzynski, earlier named to the A.L. All-Star team, in the seventh.
Royals 6, Blue Jays 2: At Kansas City, Mo., Mark Redman, Kansas City’s lone selection to the All-Star game, allowed five hits in eight-plus innings and Mark Teahen homered and doubled. Kansas City has won 12 of its last 17 games while Toronto has dropped three of its last four.
Athletics 7, Angels 5: At Oakland, Frank Thomas hit a walk-off two-run homer for the seventh home run of the game, lifting the A’s over Los Angeles and snapping the Angels’ season-best five-game winning streak. Oakland’s Esteban Loaiza allowed four home runs to match his career high.
