Prospect who visited Gonzaga opts for Cincinnati program

The Spokesman-Review

Hernol Hall, the 6-foot-10, 240-pound center from Lon Morris (Texas) College, who recently took an official recruiting visit to Gonzaga University, has decided to become a Cincinnati Bearcat.

Hall, who has two years of eligibility remaining, told the Cincinnati Post he chose Cincinnati because he thought it was the best place for him as a player and a student.

“I think the Big East is a good place for me to see what level I can play basketball,” said Hall, a native of Limon, Costa Rica, who originally signed a letter of intent with Duquesne, but obtained his release after the coaching staff there was released.

Hall, who was considered the best JC big man still unsigned, also took recruiting visits to South Florida and Oklahoma.

Rodeo

Cheney native Ryan Gray rode all four of his bareback horses at the Calgary Stampede but did not win enough money to advance to Sunday’s championship round, where the winner gets $100,000.

Gray’s best finish was third on Saturday with an 89.5 score, good for $2,000. He had the same score on Friday, but that only placed him seventh. He placed ninth on his last two rides.

The Stampede changed its format this year to a tournament-style setup, with only 20 entered in each event. A group of 10 competes the first four days, with the top four earning money. The top four in winnings after four days advance.

The second 10 began competition on Tuesday, including Sandpoint bareback rider Rowdy Buechner.

On Saturday, the bottom six in each event will compete again with the top two joining the eight automatic qualifiers for Sunday’s championship.

Baseball

The Kitsap BlueJackets’ Ross Humes of Washington State and Spokane RiverHawks’ Darin Holcomb of Gonzaga University and Shadle Park High School were named co-Players of the Week in the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League. Humes picked up two wins in two starts. Holcomb went 9 for 19 with four doubles, a home run and eight RBIs.

The RiverHawks (15-6) are on top of the WCCBL standings after a doubleheader split Sunday at Avista Stadium. Aloha won the first game 6-1, but Spokane rebounded to win the second 7-5 to keep its three-game lead in the league.

The RiverHawks are off until Thursday when they open the second half of their season with a three-game series at Moses Lake.

The WCCBL all-star game was held Tuesday night in Wenatchee. No results were reported.
