Soccer can manage

The Spokesman-Review

After reading Ian O’Connor’s story (July 11) about the U.S. not catching World Cup fever, I have to agree with him completely.

At the same time I say, “So what?” I personally enjoy the game and have had two kids play through high school. I even started playing myself in my early 40s.

Cricket is a popular sport in India and I am not sure that they care that only a handful of countries play that sport. Football has been in Europe for a number of years and has never done that well. A number of teams have folded.

The beauty of soccer is that average-sized people can play it and commercials don’t stop the flow. As much as I enjoy college football and basketball, the constant stopping gets on my nerves.

Yes, I would like to see more goals, but it is still more enjoyable than NBA basketball.

At least Italy is a true World Champion, as opposed to our teams that win in the U.S. but still call themselves the best in the world.
