Twins’ Stewart could be finished

Shannon Stewart might have played his last game with the Minnesota Twins.

With severe pain in his left foot stemming from an aggravation of an earlier injury that prompted a six-week stint on the disabled list, Stewart shook his head when asked Monday if he thought he could come back this season.

Stewart has had plantar fasciitis problems in both feet over the past three years, limiting him to 92 games in 2004 and 44 this season. The plantar fascia is a long tissue that connects the heel bone to the base of the toes.

The 32-year-old Stewart will be a free agent this fall and in all likelihood won’t be re-signed.

The prognosis for center fielder Torii Hunter is better. Eligible to be activated from the disabled list on July 31, Hunter said that he would be ready to return from the stress fracture in his left foot.

Gammons released

Peter Gammons, an ESPN analyst and member of the writer’s wing of the baseball Hall of Fame, was released from a Boston hospital where he was being treated for a brain aneurysm.

The 61-year-old Gammons was moved to an undisclosed rehabilitation center, his wife, Gloria said in a statement. Gammons was stricken at his Cape Cod home June 27 and airlifted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Oh has stomach operation

Japan home run king Sadaharu Oh had successful surgery to remove a tumor from his stomach, the Softbank Hawks said.

The 66-year-old manager was hospitalized last week in Tokyo after tests found a tumor in his stomach. He did not say whether the tumor was cancerous.

Clearing the bases

Boston Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield left the game against Kansas City after four innings with a strained upper back. He was listed as day to day and was to undergo tests. … Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Troy Glaus missed the game against the Texas Rangers after receiving a cortisone shot for his sore right knee and will likely miss one to two more games.
