Lynx pitch in to complement Augustus
Seimone Augustus got some help from her friends.
The WNBA’s top scorer had 18 points and teammate Amber Jacobs had a career-high 24 to lead the Minnesota Lynx past the Chicago Sky 90-82 on Wednesday at Minneapolis.
Reserve Svetlana Abrosimova added 18 for the Lynx, who finished 3-2 on their five-game homestand.
“We need Seimone, she makes our team,” Jacobs said. “When us other role players can step up and contribute, that makes less work for Seimone.”
Candice Dupree had 14 points for Chicago, which tied a season high for points allowed. Stacey Dales had 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and Bernadette Ngoyisa had 12.
The Sky lost their fourth straight overall and ninth straight on the road, dropping to 0-12 against Western Conference teams.
“We just needed to get some defensive stops and we didn’t, and we needed to take care of the ball better,” Dupree said.
Augustus, who averages 23.3 points per game, scored eight points during a 20-5 run midway through the third quarter for a 71-56 Minnesota lead. Abrosimova capped the run with a 3-pointer and Jacobs had six points during the stretch.
“I felt like I was going to be more aggressive off the bench,” said Abrosimova, who averaged 10.5 points in her last six games.
Sting 73, Shock 67: At Auburn Hills, Mich., Sheri Sam and Tangela Smith each scored 15 points and Tammy Sutton-Brown had a season-high 12 rebounds to lead Charlotte past Detroit.
Charlotte, winners of three straight, hadn’t won in Detroit since July 3, 2003.
Mercury 96, Mystics 83: At Washington, Penny Taylor and Kelly Miller scored 22 points apiece to lead Phoenix over Washington.
Alana Beard scored 23 points for the Mystics, including 10 in an 18-5 spurt that gave Washington a 70-65 lead midway through the third quarter.
