Tigers 2, White Sox 1: At Detroit, Marcus Thames’ hard takeout slide broke up a potential inning-ending double play in the seventh and Chris Shelton followed with a go-ahead double as Detroit defeated Chicago before a sellout crowd of 41,075 at Comerica Park. The victory gave the Tigers a season-high 5 1/2 -game lead over Chicago in the Central. Detroit has the best record in baseball at 64-31.

Twins 6, Devil Rays 4: At Minneapolis, Johan Santana (11-5) struck out seven in six innings and Minnesota defeated Tampa Bay for its seventh straight win, improving to a major league-best 37-11 at home.

Red Sox 6, Rangers 4: At Boston, Curt Schilling (12-3) pitched seven innings to lead Boston past Texas for its fourth straight win, but a Red Sox string of scoreless innings pitched was ended at 22.

Blue Jays 5, Yankees 4 (11): At Toronto, Vernon Wells homered off Mariano Rivera in the 11th to lead Toronto past New York. Wells hit his 24th homer, the first game-winning homer allowed by Rivera (4-5) since July 24, 2004.

Royals 9, Angels 4: At Kansas City, Mo., Kansas City took advantage of three errors by Los Angeles in the sixth inning to score the tie-breaking run in a 4-4 game.
