Hofstra’s Danowski will head Duke lacrosse
Duke University has hired John Danowski from Hofstra to coach its embattled men’s lacrosse team, the new coach said Friday.
Danowski, whose son Matt is a Duke senior and All-America attackman for the Blue Devils, will replace Mike Pressler, who resigned soon after a woman told police she was raped by three men at a March team party where she was hired to perform as a stripper.
•UCLA football coach Karl Dorrell and basketball coach Ben Howland each have agreed to new contracts giving them significant raises.
Dorrell will get a $250,000 raise to $850,000 for the upcoming school year. His deal is for five years.
Howland gets a $220,000 hike for this season to $1.15 million, plus possible bonuses in his seven-year deal.
•Miami Hurricanes reserve safety Willie Cooper was shot in the buttocks by an unknown person who fled after another player, roommate Brandon Meriweather, returned gunfire.
The injury wasn’t believed to be serious.
•Former U.S. Naval Academy quarterback Lamar S. Owens Jr., acquitted of raping a female midshipman but convicted of two lesser charges, should not face any punishment, a military jury recommended.
•The NCAA has removed Virginia schools Oak Hill Academy and Fork Union Military Academy from a list of schools whose academic standards were being questioned after visiting both schools and reviewing their academic methods and practices.

Serena Williams reached the semifinals for the first time in more than a year, beating Amy Frazier 6-2, 6-2 to advance in the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open at Mason, Ohio.

Hjertstedt in lead pack
Gabriel Hjertstedt captured the B.C. Open nine years ago to become the first Swede to win on the PGA Tour. Now, he’s positioned for a repeat performance at Verona, N.Y.
Hjertstedt, Scott Gump, and 35-year-old rookie Daisuke Maruyama of Japan each shot a second consecutive 5-under-par 67 to tie for the second-round lead at 134.

Kemp arrested again
Shawn Kemp was arrested and charged in Houston with possession of marijuana, the latest drug-related trouble for the former NBA All-Star.
Kemp checked into a rehabilitation clinic for cocaine use in 2001. In April 2005, he was arrested for possessing small amounts of cocaine and marijuana in his truck.
•A Chicago judge ruled for Michael Jordan in a legal battle between the former NBA star and a woman who claimed Jordan reneged on a promise to pay her $5 million in hush money when she claimed she was pregnant with his child.
•Former Tour de France cycling champion Jan Ullrich was fired by his T-Mobile team, several weeks after he was linked to a Spanish doctor charged with doping, resulting in his expulsion from this year’s Tour.
