Nash’s new haircut is all the buzz at Canadian camp
Steve Nash has replaced his mop-top with a buzz cut. The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player showed up at a basketball camp Wednesday in Vancouver, British Columbia, with his trademark unruly hairdo gone.
“I just cut it,” shrugged the Phoenix Suns star. “I don’t really have a rhyme or reason. I felt like taking it off.”
Nash is almost as famous for his long, wild hair as he is for his pinpoint passes and sharp shooting. Fans of an NBA video game even complained the Canadian point guard’s hair did not “flow” properly, forcing the manufacturer to make changes.
Nash took time to work with about 20 of Canada’s top high school basketball players attending a Nike-sponsored training camp.
“I was like, “Wow,’ ” said Vancouver’s Robert Sacre, a 6-foot-11 high school student who has already committed to attend Gonzaga.
Stretch of a stretch run
Filiberto Camacho beat eight jockeys in a 70-yard sprint Saturday. He did it without a horse.
The jockeys-only dash was part of the inaugural Extreme Day at Calder Race Course in Florida, a day of oddball races that officials hope will alleviate summer doldrums in the middle of the track’s long May-to-January season.
Camacho, running barefoot, beat Carlos Olivero by 1 1/2 lengths, according to judges – covering the distance in 8.43 seconds.
Races involving horses still made up the big part of the day.
In another Extreme Day event, jockeys Rosemary Homeister Jr. and Kristi Chapman rode to victory, finishing first and second in the $30,000 Battle of the Sexes Invitational.
The women defeated the track’s top male jockeys, Albel Castellano Jr. and Manoel Cruz.
It’s celebrity golf when …
Last weekend, golf fans had a choice of watching a celebrity golf tournament or the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic. David Thomas of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram listed these as signs you were watching the celebrity golf:
•”On every hole, an announcer could truthfully say, ‘Par is a good score on this hole.’ “
•”More ‘fores’ than ‘fours.’ “
•”You can recognize the names on the leaderboard.”
