In brief: School to reinstate two women’s sports

Slippery Rock University must reinstate two women’s sports it cut for budgetary reasons because the school is not complying with Title IX – a federal law requiring equal opportunities for female athletes.

The university said in January it was cutting eight sports to save $350,000 – including women’s field hockey, water polo and swimming – as part of an effort to erase a $2 million shortfall. The school later decided to keep field hockey, but members of the women’s swimming and water polo teams challenged the cuts in court.

Pacers, Mavs swap

The trade sending point guard Anthony Johnson to the Dallas Mavericks and veteran floor leader Darrell Armstrong and two young players to the Indiana Pacers was completed Monday.

Armstrong’s agent, Glenn Schwartzman, announced the sign-and-trade deal Sunday. The swap, which also included forward Josh Powell and swingman Rawle Marshall, couldn’t be completed until the NBA office opened Monday.

Sun top Liberty

Taj McWilliams-Franklin scored 22 points and Katie Douglas and Lindsay Whalen added 16 apiece to lead the first-place Connecticut Sun to an 89-71 victory over New York, handing the Liberty their franchise-record 11th straight loss.

Asjha Jones had 13 and Erin Phillips 10 to lead Connecticut to its fourth straight win. The Sun won their third straight at Madison Square Garden, and improved the league’s top road record to 9-4.

Jockey scrutinized

Jockey Paul O’Neill will be investigated by the sport’s governing body after television replays showed him head-butting his horse, City Affair.

The Horseracing Regulatory Authority made the decision to hold an inquiry after reviewing TV footage from the incident at the Stratford races on Sunday.

“Ricky Williams had successful surgery on his broken left forearm, but there is no timetable for his return to the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts.

“The Brazilian soccer confederation has hired former captain Dunga as coach of the national team.
