Area Scouts attain Eagle rank

Three area residents were recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award given in the Boy Scouts.

Brian Johnson, a member of Troop 80, is a senior at Mt. Spokane High School. For his project he created a promotional video for the Westminster House, a nonprofit in the West Central neighborhood. Johnson is the son of Mark and Gaylene Johnson of Mead.

Kacey Starzman, a member of Troop 779, recently graduated from Wilbur High School. For his project he re-covered the doors and windows at the Hellgate Youth Cabin with Plexiglas. He is the son of Wade and Traci Starzman of Wilbur.

Michael Johnson, also a member of Troop 779, is the son of Tom and Cathy Johnson of Wilbur. He recently graduated from Wilbur High School. For his project Johnson completed a painting project for the Wilbur School District.

“Colby Smithmeyer recently graduated from the U.S Military Academy. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army. Smithmeyer, a 2002 graduate of West Valley High School, is the son of Steve and Sandra Smithmeyer of Spokane.

“Two area residents recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. Air Force Airman Nicholas Banks, a 2004 graduate of Moses Lake High School, is the son of Michael and Debbie Banks of Moses Lake.

Air Force Airman James Stacks, the son of Patricia Stacks of Moses Lake, is a 2005 graduate of Moses Lake High School.

“Mark Yehl recently graduated from Wittenberg University in Ohio with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Yehl is the son of Terry and Donald Yehl of Spokane.

“Ryan Scoggin recently graduated from the Air Force Academy with a bachelor’s degree in systems engineering-mechanical systems and was commissioned a second lieutenant. Scoggin, a 2001 graduate of West Valley High School, is the son of Vern and Vicki Scoggin of Spokane. He is scheduled to attend pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas.

“Emily Calkins was recently named to the spring 2006 dean’s list at Malacaster College, Minn. Students must hold a grade-point average of 3.7 or above to be named to the list. Calkins is the daughter of Beth and Eric Calkins of Spokane.
