Trial against saddam

The Spokesman-Review

Saddam Hussein’s trial began Oct. 19, 2005, for the deaths of more than 140 Iraqis in 1982 in the town of Dujail, following an assassination attempt against Saddam.

The five-judge panel adjourned Thursday until Oct. 16. The verdict, which might include a sentence of death by hanging for Saddam, could be delivered in October.

Saddam and others have recently gone on a hunger strike, demanding more security for defense lawyers – three members of the defense team have been killed since the trial began. Saddam was hospitalized in connection with the hunger strike.

Saddam is due to stand trial beginning Aug. 21 for charges regarding a 1988 massacre in which an estimated 100,000 Kurds died. Another charge regards the slaughter of thousands of Shiites during an uprising in 1991.
