Michelle Wie had a two-shot lead after 11 holes and seemed poised to answer all of the questions about when her first professional win was going to come.

Then the 16-year-old from Hawaii bogeyed the 13th hole.

That was all Karrie Webb needed.

Webb became the first woman to win three events this season after shooting a 4-under 68 in the final round of the Evian Masters in Evian, France on Saturday, denying Wie her first LPGA Tour victory.

Webb finished at 16-under 272 for the tournament, one stroke ahead of both Wie (68) and 42-year-old Laura Davies (67). Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash. (68-282) finished 11th and won $56,876.

“I’m getting very close. Today was the closest I’ve ever been. It’s not as easy as it would seem,” Wie said of getting her first win.

It marked Wie’s best result this year and the fourth time in her career that she has finished as the runner-up in a professional tournament. In 2005, she was the runner-up at the McDonald’s Championship and tied for second at the SBS Open, as well as the Evian Masters. She and Lorena Ochoa finished eight shots behind Paula Creamer in last year’s tournament.

PGA

Corey Pavin stayed on a record-setting pace, even though it took him two days to finish his second round at the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee.

Pavin had to play seven holes early after darkness halted play the night before, but he finished with a 6-under 64 to take a 15-under 125 lead into the third round later in the day. That tied the 46-year-old Pavin with Tiger Woods, Mark Calcavecchia and Tom Lehman for the record for the lowest score through the first 36 holes on the PGA Tour.

After drawing attention last week for staying stateside to defend his B.C. Open title, Jason Bohn shot a 65 and a 64 in his first two rounds and was in second place at 11 under.

Senior British Open

Loren Roberts shot a 1-under 69, the only score under par in the third round, to take a four-stroke lead in the Senior British Open in Turnberry, Scotland.

Roberts, who won the first three tournaments on the Champions Tour this season, overcame rainy and windy conditions to move closer to his second senior major title. He will carry an 11-under 199 into the final round today at Turnberry.

Eduardo Romero, Roberts’ nearest rival, missed a 5-foot par putt on the final hole to finish with a 3-over 73. He fell to 7 under for the tournament, two shots ahead of Tim Simpson (72), who is alone in third place at 5-under 205.

Curtis Cup

Former Washington Husky Paige Mackenzie helped her team to a three-point lead in foursome play, then won her individual match with a bogey-free round to help the United States take a 7-2 advantage after the first day of the Curtis Cup in Bandon, Ore.
