Evergreen earns track victories across the board

Evergreen swept all four meets during this year’s Vern Fox Middle School All-League boys and girls track and field championships.

In boys competition Evergreen edged Freeman 84-76 during the Class A meet and beat Bowdish and Horizon 121-82-80 in the B meet.

During girls contests, Evergreen’s Class A team beat Greenacres 110 1/2-89 1/2 with Horizon third at 81. The Class B squad rolled up 162 points, nearly double that of runner-up Greenacres.

Times and distances, including three new records, across the board were generally solid.

Evergreen’s Nikki Caudill lowered the Class B 200-meter race mark to 27.14 seconds, a .46 improvement, in leading Evergreen to its runaway triumph.

She also won the 100 and was second to Horizon’s Annie Millard in the long jump and 400. Millard shattered Caudill’s year-old 400 record by .5 second to 1:01.9.

Evergreen went one-two in the javelin, finished second through fourth in the long jump and second and third in the shot put.

Evergreen’s Class A girls triumph was paced by Paula Jennings with 12.74 and 26.76 100 and 200 meter times that were not far from league marks. She also won the shot put and was second in the long jump, accounting for more than a third of the team scoring.

Haleigh Miller added places in three sprint races and Rachel Ford was second in the 800 and 1,600 distance runs.

Evergreen’s boys won two individual events in Class A, Nick Pendergrass in the hurdles and Ralston Guthrie in the javelin.

But depth, particularly the long and high jumps, where Pendergrass finished third and second, offset a three-event win by Freeman’s Peter Heinen. Heinen won the 100, high jump and long jump.

North Pines’ David Munson was less than .1 second off the 400 record, winning in 54.29. Horizon’s Jeremy Simpson turned in strong 2:12.88 and 5:03.3 800 and 1,600 wins, beating teammate Aaron Blaska by .04 in the former.

Horizon’s Joel Mickelson also had a big meet, winning three Class B races, the 100, 300 and 400, He was fourth in the long jump. Horizon won two other events as well.

But Horizon couldn’t match Evergreen’s depth. Joseph Guerrinha, won the high jump and javelin during a one-two Grizzlies finish. As a team they accounted for 37 points in those two events and scored 59 points total in the field. They also finished first and second in two relays and totaled 37 more points in three sprint races.
