UW men’s golf still in lead
Washington’s men survived a rainy third day Friday to hold onto a three-stroke lead Friday at the NCAA golf championships in Sunriver, Ore.
Accompanied by a constant downpour, the Huskies shot a 6-over-par 294 and are at 7-under 857 after 54 holes. Arizona State, Oklahoma State and Wake Forest are in second at 4-under 860.
Washington sophomore Zach Bixler is at 5-under 211 and in fifth place. Two strokes back is Ferris grad Alex Prugh, in 12th after shooting a 2-over 74.
Oklahoma State’s Jonathan Moore holds the individual lead at 9-under 207.
Baseball
Jose Castenon drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the 11th inning to give host Lewis-Clark State (47-8) a 5-4 win over Cumberland (Tenn.) in the championship game of the NAIA World Series at Lewiston.
Shannon Wirth earned the win, pitching five hitless innings. Wirth stranded two runners in the 11th.
The Warriors won their 14th national title and first since 2003. Cumberland finished 51-18.
“Washington State University senior outfielder Jay Miller has been named to the Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-America third team, as announced by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
Miller, from Bellevue, Wash., batted .361, sixth in the Pacific-10 Conference, and led the conference in hits (88) and doubles (28).
Miller finished as WSU’s career hits leader with 308, and was ninth in Pac-10 history. His 74 career doubles rank No. 2 at WSU and No. 5 in the Pac-10.
Washington pitcher Tim Lincecum and Oregon State outfielder Cole Gillespie were named to the first team.
College football
Tickets for the Sept. 16 Washington State-Baylor game at Seattle’s Qwest Field will go on sale to the general public through all Ticketmaster outlets beginning at 10 a.m. Monday.
Tickets will be available by calling 206-628-0888 or on-line through www.ticketmaster.com. Prices range from $7 to $50.
Tickets may also be purchased through the WSU ticket office at 1-800-GO-COUGS or online at wsucougars.com until Sept. 11. After then, sales will be limited to Ticketmaster outlets.
Men’s rowing
Washington’s four boats all qualified for today’s grand finals of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
The Huskies’ varsity 8 boat had the day’s second-best qualifying time, finishing the 2,000-meter course in 5 minutes, 44.18 seconds.
Gonzaga’s varsity 4 and freshman 8 also qualified for today’s finals. The varsity 4 finished third in its heat at 6:41.80, qualifying for the first final since 1997.
