Potlatch announces scholarships

The Potlatch Foundation for Higher Education recently announced its scholarship recipients in Eastern Washington and North Idaho. Recipients were chosen based on financial need, scholastic achievement and community activities. This year 75 students from around the country were selected from more than 550 applicants. Each scholarship is worth $1,400 per year and some recipients have been awarded the scholarship for multiple years.

“ Several area residents recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Martha Rocha, a 2005 graduated of Othello High School, is the daughter of Margaret Rocha of Othello, Wash.

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Kelly Rohrbach, a 2000 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, is the daughter of John Rohrbach of Medical Lake and Katherine Bartcher of Cleveland, Tenn.

Air Force Airman Justin Brand, a 2004 graduate of North Central High School, is the son of Kenneth and Zailya Johnson of Spokane.

Idaho

“The North Idaho Alumni Association recently awarded scholarships to several North Idaho residents. Shannon Duncan of Post Falls was awarded a $1,500 Doug and Jan Bell Memorial Scholarship.

Scholarships for $600 were also awarded to Jessica Becker of Coeur d’Alene, Brieanne Bromley of Wallace, Stacey Calvert of Sandpoint, Lianne Gallinger of Coeur d’Alene, Naomi Julian of Coeur d’Alene, Rebecca Lang of Sagle, Heather Lewis of Pinehurst and Cynthia Rogers of Priest River. Dustan Roop of Cocolalla also was awarded the $600 Hugh Smith Memorial Scholarship.

“The Phi Upsilon Omicron chapter at the University of Idaho recently welcomed new members. Students must hold a grade-point average of 3.0 or better and be a family and consumer sciences student in order to be a member. Students are listed by their hometown.

“The American Legion Post 149 in Athol recently selected eight juniors from the Lakeland School District to attend the American Legion Idaho Gem Boys State program. Students are selected based on leadership, involvement in school, academic achievement and athletic achievement.

Lakeland High School: Tyler Bethke, Drew Hooper, Michael Peterson, Kevin Ramus, Casey Schelin and Marcus Williams.

“ Hillary Burr of Coeur d’Alene was recently awarded the Raymond G. Hunthausen Outstanding Collegiate Citizenship Award for 2006 by Carroll College. Students are nominated for the annual award based on their community service. Burr is the daughter of Douglas Burr and Gwen Fransen, both of Coeur d’Alene.
