Seahawks get NFC title rings
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Like a bride-to-be whose engagement ring fell just short of expectations, the Seattle Seahawks accepted their jewelry graciously Wednesday afternoon while wishing they could have had more.
The players were brought into a tent after a morning minicamp practice to receive their NFC Championship rings. They were all impressed with the design and size of the rings, yet many Seahawks were already hoping to get a Super upgrade next year.
“Now we just need to add a ring,” said kicker Josh Brown, whose team lost 21-10 to Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XL four months ago. “The NFC Championship ring is a great display of the things we accomplished, but it just reminds us what we could have had.”
The rings include 58 diamonds, crystallized, volcanic blue stone and a team logo. On one side of the ring are personalized names, positions and an image of Mt. Rainier. The other side features images of Qwest Field and climbing devices called carabiners.
The mountain motif stems from a preseason speech from renowned mountain climber Ed Viesturs, who talked to the players about the importance of teamwork and setting goals. Viesturs’s speech concluded with a photo of Mt. Rainier that was on display in the team’s cafeteria all season.
With each Seahawks win, the photo added a final score to the side of the mountain, leading up toward the peak. Players were also rewarded with carabiners in their lockers after victories.
