Chiropractor’s trial delayed until October

The Spokesman-Review

The trial for a Post Falls chiropractor accused of insurance fraud has been postponed until October.

Timothy Grothman, owner of Health Within Chiropractic Center, was indicted in March on 70 counts of insurance fraud in U.S. District Court.

Grothman, 52, pleaded not guilty to charges that he billed insurance companies in Tennessee and elsewhere for dozens of services he didn’t perform.

Grothman is accused of double-billing, billing for services he didn’t provide and charging new patient fees for examining existing clients between 1998 and 2003, according to court records.

Grothman’s lawyer, Mark Vovos, of Spokane, said that the problems resulted from coding errors and that the issue was sparked in part by disgruntled former employees.

U.S. District Court Judge Edward Lodge set a new trial date of Oct. 10 in Coeur d’Alene.

School funding group grades state efforts

Supporters of a November ballot initiative, who are asking Idaho voters to increase the sales tax by a penny to raise funds for public schools, gave the state failing grades Thursday in the areas of school funding, teacher-student ratio and the number of graduates entering college.

“It makes sense that as our kids are getting their grades, people in Idaho understand how our state is performing regarding funding for our local schools,” said Ryan Hill in a press release.

Hill is the spokesman for the Invest in Our Kids’ Education campaign.

The report card gave teacher, parent and administrator efforts an A+ and teacher pay a B.

Supporter Camy Popiel, of Coeur d’Alene, said the card was produced to draw attention to the upcoming ballot initiative, called the Idaho Local Public Schools Investment Act.
