Veteran broadcaster Bob Briley wins Emmy

At age 82, veteran Spokane broadcaster Bob Briley has won his first Northwest Regional Emmy Award.

Briley was part of the Peak Video team that produced the documentary “Summer of Dreams,” about a Spokane Tribe of Indians summer youth program. It won in the Children & Youth Program category at the awards ceremony Saturday in Seattle.

The former longtime KHQ television and radio newsman narrated the documentary, which was written and produced by his daughter, Robin Briley, and photographed and edited by Jim Bolser. Her father simply never bothered entering the Emmys before, Robin Briley said.

•Several area residents have recently been awarded scholarships for the 2006-07 academic year at Washington State University.

Benjamin Clark received a $1,000 Bell Freshman Mathematics Scholarship. Clark, a 2005 graduate of Riverside High School, is the son of Kim and Donald Clark of Chattaroy.

Emilee Hearrean, a 2004 graduate of Rogers High School, received a $1,000 Department of Mathematics Undergraduate Endowment Fund Award. Hearrean is the daughter of Elizabeth Heath and David Hearrean of Spokane.

Four WSU students received a $1,000 William and Mary Lynn Graber Mathematics Development Endowment Fund Scholarship. They are:

Ryan Reisert, who also received a $1,250 Delbert E. and Marilyn M. Jones Memorial Scholarship. Reisert, is a 2004 graduate of Rogers High School and is son of Sandee and Rick Deligt of Spokane.

Julie Solbrack, a 2003 graduate of Colfax High School, is the daughter of Diane and Dennis Solbrack of Colfax.

Katherine Swanson, the daughter of Jeannie and Greg Swanson of Spokane Valley, is a 2003 graduate of Central Valley High School.

Patrick Valeri, the son of Cindy and John Valeri of Spokane, is a 2003 graduate of Reardan High School, Reardan, Wash.

• Lisa Stoll recently was awarded a $2,000 Best Buy Children’s Foundation Awards Scholarship. Stoll, a 2006 graduate of West Valley High School, is the daughter of Mark and Susan Stoll.

• Five area high school students were recently selected to receive $500 Farmers and Merchants Bank/Spokane Indians Scholarships. The awards were given based on academics, leadership and community involvement. The students are: Jordan Clark, Lewis and Clark; Michael Hauschild, West Valley; Samson Lim, Mead; Nicole Seedall, Shadle Park; and Michelle Sybouts, Ferris.

•Several Spokane residents were recently named to the winter term honor roll at Oregon State University. Students are required to hold a 3.5 grade-point average or better to be named to the list. The students are: John Batch, Meghan Johnson, Jeff Otis and Margaret Whiting.

•Four area residents recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Air Force Airman Jeremy Meyers, a 2004 graduate of Northwest Christian High School, is the son of John and Ginny Meyers of Spokane.

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Jason Collison, the son of Robert Collison of Anchorage, Alaska, and Gloria Treis of Mead, is a 1999 graduate of Chugiak High School, Alaska.

Air Force Airman Thomas Comstock, a 2002 graduate of North Central High School, is the son of Cristina Heath of Spokane.

Air Force Airman Christopher Marro is the son of Michael and Terri Marro of Spokane.

•The University of Idaho chapter of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society has recently inducted new members. Students must hold a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher to be eligible for membership. Students are listed by their hometown.
