Bracing for big weekend

Next weekend is a biggie for people interested in buying or paddling canoes and kayaks.

Paddle Fair, Saturday: Try gear, test drive boats, talk to reps from at least six manufacturers at Bear Lake County Park off Highway 2 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Spokane River Canoe Classic, Sunday: A colorful flotilla of canoes and kayaks will assemble at Corbin Park in Post Falls for the 11 a.m. start of the 20th annual event. Enter the citizens division and go six miles downstream to Harvard Road. Marathon division goes 13 miles, including a wet ride through Flora and Sullivan Rapids, to Plante’s Ferry Park.

Awards for solo and team entries, men’s and women’s divisions, in canoe and kayak. All participants eligible for the prizes. Cost: $20 per person.

Field study in Glacier Park

The Glacier Institute, and educational partner to Glacier National Park, offers unique hands-on field based educational adventures for all ages throughout the year. Adventures range from one- to three-day classes taught by veteran instructors.

Learn while hiking, biking or rafting in summer field courses covering topics such as grizzly bear or wolf ecology, wildflower identification, geology, bird-watching, photography and watercolor painting.

Learn to sail

What: Sailing clinics. Each clinic has four sessions.

Who: For adults, sponsored by North Idaho College’s Outdoor Pursuits.

When: Tuesdays starting July 11 and Tuesdays starting Aug. 8.

Where: North Idaho College beach at Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Details: $80 fee covers instruction, boats, equipment.
