Play new activities with kids

Every year on Father’s Day my parents throw the most incredible barbecue.

Last year, Mom bought a soccer ball and my stepdad made up a game that was kind of a cross between kickball and miniature golf, but with trash-talk included.

It didn’t matter how old we were. I’m pretty sure the age range of the players stretched from 5 to 80. The entire family – nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, grandparents and a couple of family friends – had a blast kicking the soccer ball across the backyard and taking bets on who would win.

The June/July issue of Child Magazine has a few suggestions for more backyard fun, including challenging smaller kids to see who can spin a hula hoop the longest, getting everyone to join a game of Twister or simply running through sprinklers.

Baseball camp

Whitworth Physical Therapy is presenting its Sixth Annual Hart Field Baseball Camp with former Seattle Mariner and New York Yankee, Lenny Randle.

Randle played several positions, so the kids will get to learn a little of everything. Hitting, fielding, throwing and pitching are among the activities planned. The coed camp runs June 19 through 23. It will have classes for kids ages 8 through 12 from 9 a.m. to noon, and classes for teens ages 13 through 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Hart Field at 37th and Grand Boulevard.

The cost is $175 and includes a T-shirt, ball, games and prizes. For more information, call Nick Pupo or Shannon Beckner of Whitworth Physical Therapy at (509) 464-0878

Sewing camp

For kids who would rather sew instead of throw this summer, Boyd-Walker Sewing Machine Co., 9439 N. Newport Highway, is giving kids three chances to attend sewing camp.

Sewing camps will be held June 20 through 30, July 11 through 21, and July 25 through Aug. 4. All classes will be held Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Campers will receive their very own Pfaff Hobby 1132 sewing machine. The cost for each session is $335.57. For information, call Boyd-Walker at (509) 467-2270.
