Anderson wins pair of titles at AMA Amateurs

Ten-year-old Wyatt Anderson of Spokane won two West Coast Championships at the AMA Amateur flat track West Coast Nationals, held May 26-28 in Lodi, Calif.

This three-day competition featured kids from all over California, Oregon and Washington racing on three different tracks.

Anderson, who was the only one from the Spokane area to compete in the event, will now prepare for the Grand Championships, held July 2-9 in Duquoin, Ill.

Baseball

The Spokane Crush U-12 Baseball Club has recently qualified for the West Coast Nationals, held Labor Day weekend in Portland, Ore.

The Crush have won three regional tournaments so far this summer to qualify for the nationals, and will also be competing in the USSSA State Championships held July 7-9 in Bremerton, Wash.

•The Spokane Dodgers American Legion team beat Rainer Red 11-1 in the championship game on Sunday to win the Palouse Summer Series held at Washington State University in Pullman.

Tanner Hamilton was named MVP after hitting two home runs in the tournament. Shea Vucinich was awarded the Gold Glove and Nat Burgher, who had a perfect game going into the 5th inning earlier in the tourney against the Edmonton Cardinals, was recognized as the Most Outstanding Pitcher.

Basketball

The 10th annual Washington All-State girls basketball games will be played Saturday at East Valley.

Games begin at 1:30 p.m. with Class B East vs. B West. Following are games between the 1A East and West and 2A/3A East and West.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and children 12 and younger.

Among the competitors are 10 Associated Press All-State players. Chelan’s multi-sport star Cassy Pilkinton heads the 2A/3A field. She’ll play on the East team that includes seven Great Northern League athletes, Alyssa Garro and Jamie Thornton from Pullman, Caitlin Smith and Richelle Daily from Medical Lake, Kia Gibson from Lakeside, Brooke Schanzenbach from Chewelah and Laura Gibson from Deer Park.

Four AP All-State players will be featured in the 1A game, including Jordan Harazin from state champion Colfax. Others are Lauren Rada, Columbia Burbank and Kyla Evans, Brewster, for the East and Kendra Redmon, White Pass from the West.

Also, Northeast A League players Megan Teade from Colfax, Kelsey Raines of Freeman and Newport’s Maria Barranco are on the East roster.

Five Class B AP All-State players, three from the East and two from the West, will play in the opener. Included are Dora Brings Yellow from Taholah, who averaged 19 points per game, and 18.3 scorer Lexi Belcher from Mossyrock for the West.

The East team includes 11 double-figure scorers. Among them are LaSalle All-State players Molly McGree and Jasmine Stohr and Sprague-Harrington’s Stacie Shields. Shields is one of eight players from Bi-County and Panorama League teams.

Others are Jen Christerson, Reardan; Chanel Ford and Samantha Flett, Wellpinit; Misty Ostlie and Amanda Smith, Cusick; Nichole Miller, Curlew and Roni Jo Mielke, Sprague-Harrington.

Gymnastics

Sara Hansen, a senior at Mt. Spokane, placed 18th on floor with a 9.125 and 26th all around with a 33.95 at high school nationals, held May 25-26 in St. Pete’s Beach, Fla.

After winning the floor at regionals, held February 11 at University High School, Hansen was one of three Spokane girls to make the trip to nationals, joining University’s Kayla McGahey and Rachel Rupp from Lewis and Clark.

Track

Mead junior Nikki Codd finished third in the girls 800-meter run during the Golden West Invitational Track Meet in Folsom, Calif.

Codd timed 2 minutes, 10.4 seconds in the race, behind Fairview, Colo., winner Sarah Cocco’s 2:08.45.

The Mead athlete finished second in the event during the Washington State 4A meet in Pasco. Her personal best time this year is 2:09.73.
