Pullman, Northwest Christian capture scholastic cup honors

The Spokesman-Review

Pullman won the Wells Fargo Scholastic Cup for 2A schools and Northwest Christian was the runaway winner for the B award, the WIAA announced recently.

The award is earned through points awarded for statewide finishes in academics, athletics and sportsmanship. Richland (4A), Mercer Island (3A) and Bellevue Christian (1A) also won awards.

NWC (930 points) earned the B honor by 200 points over Evergreen Lutheran. Other local B schools in the top 10 included Odessa, St. George’s, Sprague-Harrington, Davenport and Wilbur-Creston.

Three Greater Spokane League schools finished among the top seven in 4A, including runner-up Ferris (1,245 points), last year’s champion. Mead and Mt. Spokane were the others.

Colfax finished fourth in the 1A standings.

Mike Barbero has been named University High’s new coach.

He replaces Linda Lanker, who resigned because of an impending family move to Idaho.

Barbero is son of former Titans coach Bob Barbero, who headed U-Hi’s program for 22 years before moving in fall 2001 to Mt. Spokane, where he coached girls cross country.

The younger Barbero, a 1999 graduate, ran for his father during a period in which the Titans won three straight state titles.
