Hitting Idaho’s art trail

Moscow Artwalk:

It’s an arranged marriage that works. Artists yearn for people to view their work. Local businesses have an abundance of wall space and want new folks to walk through their front doors. Bring them together and, presto – you have extremely popular community artwalks.

Starting Friday, dozens of shops and restaurants in both Moscow and Sandpoint will transform themselves into public art galleries for the summer.

“Each year it gets better and better,” says Deena Heath, Moscow Arts Commission director and coordinator of Moscow Artwalk 2006. “There’s a lot of energy downtown. It’s all very festive.”

Pick up free artwalk tour maps at all locations and plot your own course.

Entrée Gallery show

Jewelry fabricator Kris Howell is demonstrating her jewelry making techniques on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Entree Gallery at Priest Lake, Idaho.

Howell says her inspiration often comes from the shapes and colors of stones with which she works.

“I am drawn to these organic substances of the earth and the juxtaposition of combining them with geometric shapes and contrasting textures,” she says in a news release. “The individual stones and components almost seem to select each other and create their own story together.”

Opening Friday is the gallery’s annual yard and garden show. “Earth Elements Redefined” is a collection of outdoor functional and visual ornamentation objects.

The gallery’s gazebo is featuring an eclectic, multimedia showing of pieces by Spokane artist Jason Sheldon. “Some Things I Have Made” is a collection of large metal painted wall pieces and small to midsized wood sculptures, says gallery representative Kathleen Martin.

The gallery, open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., is on Reeder Bay Road, two miles east of Nordman near Elkins Resort.
