In brief: Cyclists top 2005 list of positive drug tests

Cycling produced the most positive drug tests of any Olympic sport in the latest global statistics compiled by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

WADA-accredited laboratories reported 482 positive samples for cyclists in 2005. Baseball was second with 390 positives, while soccer was third with 343. Track and field – the most-tested sport – was fourth with 342.

Cycling also had the highest percentage of positive tests, with 3.78 percent out of 12,751 samples, followed by baseball (3.69 percent out of 10,580) and boxing (3.41 percent of 2,433) and triathlon (3.41 percent of 2,170). Track and field had 1.67 percent positives out of 20,464 samples.

WADA oversees drug testing in Olympic and some non-Olympic sports, handling both in-competition and out-of-competition controls.

Steroids accounted for the most positive tests in 2005, 48 percent.

Coach Herrion, Charleston part ways

College of Charleston coach Tom Herrion is negotiating a buyout that would end his four years with the Southern Conference school, an official with the college told The Associated Press. Herrion took the Cougars to the NIT in his first season in 2002-03, but the team hadn’t reached the postseason since. His record was 80-38 at the school.

PSU fan gets jail term for post-win assault

Penn State student Nathan G. Lehman who assaulted a police officer as fans rushed the field after a victory last fall was sentenced to at least four months in prison, but will be eligible for work release.

Lehman pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for tackling university police officer Cyprien Brien, punching him in the face and putting him in a headlock that left him with bruised neck ligaments, authorities said.

“Jay Locey, who coached Linfield to the Division III national championship in 2004, is leaving the college to take an assistant coaching job at Oregon State, where he will work with tight ends and running backs. Locey compiled an 84-18 record with the Wildcats, extending the school’s streak of consecutive winning seasons to 50.

Guard Jasikevicius skips championships

Indiana Pacers guard Sarunas Jasikevicius has elected not to join the Lithuanian national team for the world championships in August. The 30-year-old point guard has been the top player in his country for years.

“Paul Xanthos, who coached tennis at Pierce College in Los Angeles for three decades and won 23 conference championships, died at 85.

“St. Bonaventure athletic director Ron Zwierlein plans to retire in December.
