North Idaho Girl Scouts honor volunteers
The Girl Scouts of the Inland Empire Council recently honored several North Idaho residents for their volunteer service with the Girl Scouts. All award recipients are from Coeur d’Alene unless otherwise indicated. They are: J’Nell Adams, Mary Jo Bell, Tonya Daniels and Debra Dotson of Hayden, Tara Goodwin, Laura Gordon and Linda Holehan of Post Falls, Kimberly Johnson of Hayden, Cindy Littles and Sherry May of Sandpoint, and David McCullough, Gwyn McCullough, Sheryl Mink, Michael Monaghan, Leigh Sales, Caryn Shepler and Sharon Topps.
• Kenneth Christian of Moscow High School and Heather Hagen of Logos School (Moscow) are among the 30 recipients of the Idaho State Board of Education’s Robert E. Lee Promise Category A Scholarships. The $3,000 scholarships are given based on academic achievement
• Molly McCarthy of Post Falls was recently awarded the North Idaho College Burns Award. The award is given annual to an outstanding student in the NIC biology department. McCarthy is a graduate of Coeur d’Alene High School.
• Several North Idaho high school students completed the 2006 Youth Leadership Program sponsored by the Post Falls Toastmasters Club 7562. Those who received a certificate of completion were: Josh Ashenbrenner, Sarah Lathrop, Arron Lattin, Chuck Lattin, Krissy Lattin, Leanne Lattin, Joel Schaefer, Jordan Schaefer, Ellis Schumann, Joel Sheetz and Karla Uskoski.
• Fourteen students from Idaho universities will intern at NASA facilities across the country this summer. Local students who have been selected include Danielle Ator, Coeur d’Alene; John Lacy, Post Falls; Tu Le, Spokane; and Sarah Park, Coeur d’Alene.
• The following North Idaho residents have been named to the spring 2006 dean’s list at the University of Portland. Students must hold a grade-point average of 3.5 or better to be eligible for list. Students are listed by their hometown.

• Several area residents recently graduated from the University of Portland. All degrees are bachelor’s degrees and the focus of each degree is listed.

• Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadet Yoshinobu Hara was recently awarded the George C. Marshall Award. The award is given annually to the most outstanding senior Army ROTC cadets. Hara, a student at Eastern Washington University, is the son of Nobumichi and Jane Hara of Spokane. He is a 2002 home school program graduate.
• Cassie Schreiber was recently awarded a $2,500 scholarship from the Grand Lodge of the Odd Fellows of Washington state. Schreiber, a student at Eastern Washington University, is a 2005 graduate of East Valley High School.
• Alex Stanley was recently awarded a $5,000 University Achievement Award Scholarship from Washington State University for the 2006-2007 academic year. Stanley, a 2006 graduate of West Valley High School, is the son of Laurie and Greg Stanley of Spokane.
• Joshua Palmer recently earned a certificate of completion from Amarillo College, Texas. He is a graduate of the Eclipse Alternative Program in Pullman.
• The Spokane Branch of the American Association of University Women recently awarded two $2,000 Kathleen Taft Memorial Scholarships. The recipients are Cindie Miller, a student at Eastern Washington University, and Kelly Pritzl, a student at Gonzaga University.
• Lauren Stromberger of Sprague, Wash., was recently recognized as a Distinguished Finalist in the 2006 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program, which honors youth volunteers. Stromberger coordinates a clothing bank that serves the needy. Stromberger is a senior at Sprague High School.
• Southern Illinois University-Carbondale recently honored several area residents at its annual Honors Day ceremony. Students must hold a grade-point average of 3.5 or above. Students are listed by their hometowns.

Army Pvt. Nathan Veach, a 2005 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, is the son of Pat Veach of Spokane.
Army National Guard Pfc. Jacqueline Kraus is the daughter of Kathy Hottinger of Spokane Valley.
• Air Force Airman Aaron Collins recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. Collins, the son of Diane Collins of Othello, Wash., is a 1999 graduate of Othello High School.
• Julia Dobler recently received the Grace Cowardin Dammann Award during commencement at Manhattanville College, Westchester, N.Y. The faculty award is based on scholarship and integrity and is given to a student planning to attend graduate school. Dobler, a 2002 graduate of Ferris High School, plans to attend Fordham University’s graduate psychology program in the fall.
• April Reiter of Spokane was recently elected into the Arete Society at Pacific Lutheran University. Liberal Arts students must have a grade-point average of 3.7 or above and meet other academic requirements to join the society. New members are elected by faculty members. Reiter, a graduate of Shadle Park High School, is the daughter of Debra and Steve Reiter of Spokane.
• Spokane’s Pages of Harmony barbershop chorus took first place in the recent Evergreen District Division V competition in Moses Lake. The chorus will go on to compete in the district competition in Spokane in September. The chorus is directed by Mike Elliott.
• Megan Meyer of Spokane is one of 10 students at Carleton College, Minn., who have been awarded a summer Initiative for Service internship in international development. The award pays an average of $5,000 to students who perform volunteer services in the area of international community development. Meyer will spend seven weeks in Gambia, Africa, with Operation Crossroads Africa. She will work at the Bwian General Hospital, assisting with patient care. She is the daughter of Timothy and Phyllis Meyer of Spokane.
