Ford helps Detroit end losing streak

Cheryl Ford had 15 points and a season-high 18 rebounds to help the Detroit Shock end a two-game losing streak with a 71-63 victory over the Indiana Fever on Friday night at Auburn Hills, Mich.

Katie Smith added 13 points, and Swin Cash had 12 points and eight assists for Detroit. Tamika Whitmore led Indiana with 19 points. Indiana star Tamika Catchings, selected to the WNBA’s All-Decade team earlier in the week, had three points on 1-of-10 shooting.

Comets 72, Liberty 58: At New York, Tina Thompson scored nine of her 22 points in the fourth quarter in Houston’s second victory over New York in eight days.

Silver Stars 90, Lynx 60: At San Antonio, Shannon Johnson hit her first seven shots from the field and scored 21 points to help San Antonio defeat Minnesota and snap a 10-game home losing streak.

Mercury 91, Sun 86: At Phoenix, Diana Taurasi scored a career-high 35 points to help Phoenix snap Eastern Conference-leading Connecticut’s five-game winning streak.
