Advanced river rescue

A few slots are still available for the Whitewater River Rescue seminar for rafters presented next weekend by Class V boater Brock Loveland.

The seminar involves a Friday evening classroom session followed Saturday by training on the Spokane River. Cost: $75.

What: Premier showing of “Liquid Insanity” and “Shades of Bali” videos for June feature in Mountain Gear’s Outdoor Film Series.

When: Friday, 9:15 p.m.

Where: Mountain Gear parking lot, 2002 N. Division.

Details: Liquid Insanity, produced locally by Nathan Herbeck, features Pacific Northwest whitewater plus trips to British Columbia, Montana and California. Shades of Bali, by Seven-Films, compiles five years of filming surfers on epic waves around the Indonesian island.

All film series shows are free. Bring your own chair.

Groups compete in chili cook-off

Come be the judge and cast your vote as Inland Northwest Wildlife organizations, such as the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Wild Turkey Federation, compete in a chili cook-off Saturday , 9 a.m.-3 p.m. outside Sportsman’s Warehouse at Spokane Valley Mall.

Be warned: The Inland Northwest Wildlife Council has a “Roadkill Committee.”

Inside Scotchman Peaks

Friends of the Scotchman Peaks will describe the backcountry assets in 88,000 acres of forest they’re proposing for wilderness northeast of Lake Pend Oreille in a program Monday, 7 p.m., at Corbin Senior Center, 827 W. Cleveland.

The Friends are holding an open house Thursday, 5-7 p.m. at Pend d’Oreille Winery in Sandpoint.
