Area roundup: Gonzaga will meet Nevada in fourth Battle in Seattle
The University of Nevada will be Gonzaga’s rival for the fourth annual Comcast Battle in Seattle, Dec. 30 at KeyArena in Seattle, the schools announced Tuesday.
The teams have split eight previous games, including Nevada’s second-round win at the 2004 NCAA tournament.
The Zags are 3-0 at the Battle in Seattle, including last year’s 64-62 win over Oklahoma State.
Spokane-area Ticketmaster outlets will begin selling tickets on Sept. 9. Sales at all Ticketmaster outlets will begin Sept. 16.
Baseball
Jamie Nilsen had an RBI single in the third inning and four pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout as Spokane fell to Kitsap 1-0 in West Coast Collegiate Baseball League play at Bremerton, Wash.
Ross Humes earned the win for the Blue Jackets (3-2), giving up a pair of hits while striking out two and walking three in five innings. John Foget pitched the final two innings to earn the save.
Matt Crowe started on the mound for the RiverHawks (2-3) and gave up the lone run on two hits and three walks while striking out two.
Darin Holcomb (Gonzaga University/Shadle Park), Chris Bozo (Ferris/Community Colleges of Spokane) and Chase Powell all had a pair of hits for Spokane.
“Two St. George’s players and one from Central Valley will play in the USA Junior Olympic Baseball Championships, Friday through July 1 in Arizona.
Justin Gallagher and Trenton Hauff of St. George’s and CV’s Rusty Shellhorn will play for Rocky Mountain Baseball at the tournament. This is one of two 72-team tournaments taking place – the other is in Florida.
From the 2,400 taking part, 36 players (total between both tournaments) will be chosen for the USA Baseball National Team trials in Florida.
