WORLD CUP AT A GLANCE

The Spokesman-Review

A look at Day 16 at the 2006 World Cup on Saturday:

Results

Argentina 2, Mexico 1, extra time (Argentina advances to quarterfinals)

Germany 2, Sweden 0 (Germany advances to quarterfinals)

Highlights

Argentina moved into the quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory on Maxi Rodriguez’s brilliant goal in the 98th minute of the first extra-time game in the tournament. Both teams scored early, with Rafael Marquez putting Mexico ahead in the sixth minute and Hernan Crespo equalizing in the 10th. Then they nearly wore each other out.

Germany dominated in every phase of its game with Sweden to open the second round. Lukas Podolski scored two goals in the opening 12 minutes. Miroslav Klose had two assists and toyed with the Swedish defense as did captain Michael Ballack. If not for a half-dozen saves by goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson, the margin would have been much higher than 2-0.

Stars

Maxi Rodriguez chested a long, arcing pass from captain Juan Sorin at the right corner of the penalty area and, in almost the same motion, wheeled and volleyed a soaring left-footed shot to the far portion of the net over flailing goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez to give Argentina a 2-1 win over Mexico in extra time.

Lukas Podolski scored twice in the first 12 minutes, set up both times by Miroslav Klose, in Germany’s 2-0 victory over Sweden to move into the quarterfinals.

Goal of the day

Argentina’s second in a 2-1 win over Mexico in Leipzig.

In the eighth minute of extra time, Argentina’s Juan Sorin on the left wing made a 30-yard, arcing pass to the right corner of the penalty area to Maxi Rodriguez. With defender Gonzalo Pineda right on him, Rodriguez chested the ball facing away from the net, wheeled and volleyed a left-footed blast to the far portion of the net.

Quotable

“You are only furniture suppliers.” – A chant by the crowd in Munich aimed at the Sweden team, no doubt with Ikea in mind.
