Storm overcome Monarchs

Sue Bird scored a season-high 18 points and Lauren Jackson added 16 to help the Seattle Storm beat the Sacramento Monarchs 68-53 on Tuesday night at Seattle.

The Storm had four of their starters score in double figures with center Janell Burse adding 13 points and guard Betty Lennox 12. The 6-foot-5 Jackson also pulled down 12 rebounds.

Erin Buescher scored 12 points and Yolanda Griffith added 10 for the Monarchs. Nicole Powell, Sacramento’s second-leading scorer, was limited to just three points.

Sting 73, Liberty 67: At New York, Sheri Sam scored 19 points and Tammy Sutton-Brown added 14 to lead Charlotte to its first road victory of the season.

Fever 74, Mystics 67: At Washington, Tamika Whitmore scored 11 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter to lead Indiana to a victory that ended the Mystics’ nine-game home winning streak.

Shock 63, Silver Stars 59: At San Antonio, Cheryl Ford scored 22 points and had a season-high 19 rebounds to help Detroit beat San Antonio.

Sun 73, Comets 57: At Uncasville, Conn., Nykesha Sales scored 19 points to lead Connecticut to a win over Houston.
