My dollar goes further at Wal-Mart

Describing Wal-Mart as “the giant retailer to the low income” is just plain idiocy. (“Wal-Mart issues go beyond traffic,” Feb. 23, by Sandra Babcock.)

Do I shop at Wal-Mart? You bet? I go there for hardware items and household goods. I occasionally buy a few food items and auto supplies. I buy toys for the grandchildren and computer supplies for me.

Of course, I could go elsewhere and shop in several different stores to get the same stuff at a higher price but face it, I’m not stupid. I would bet that when I am trying to find a place to park in Wal-Mart’s always crowded lot, I am not competing for these spaces with only the low income population of Spokane. And do I resent it that Wal-Mart built on the dilapidated and very empty remains of the old Shadle Shopping Center? It certainly improved that eyesore!

I frequently travel to the exclusive South Hill and can’t help but feel that the area of aging old houses converted to seedy apartments could stand a little improvement itself.

As for me, one of those upper middle income shoppers so disliked by the Wal-Mart haters of the world, I will continue to shop where my dollar goes the furthest and the prestige shoppers can continue their own “quality of life.”
