NY troupe performing ‘Macbeth’ at Panida Theater

A world-class production of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” arrives at Sandpoint’s Panida Theater on Tuesday.

World-class, because it is presented by The Acting Company, the Tony-honored New York troupe founded by John Houseman in 1972.

The Acting Company began as an offshoot of the Juilliard School’s Drama Division. It has performed the classics for 3 million people around the world, mostly at universities and community centers such as the Panida.

The New York Times called it “the most respected and praised touring repertory theater in America.”

“Macbeth” is one of Shakespeare’s starkest plays, about the ambitious Scottish nobleman and his equally ambitious wife, Lady Macbeth. When he hears three witches predict that he will become king someday, he murders King Duncan. Then he becomes wracked with guilt and paranoia.

Tuesday’s performance, sponsored by the Pend Oreille Arts Council and Unicep Packaging Inc., begins at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $22 for adults ($17.50 for POAC members), $8.50 for youth 18 and under, available in Sandpoint at the POAC office in the Power House, 120 E. Lake St. (or by phone at 208-263-6139); Eve’s Leaves, 326 N. First; FC Weskil’s, 300 N. First; and Eichardt’s Pub, 212 Cedar St.; in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, at Bonners Books, 7195 Main St.; or online at www.ArtinSandpoint.org.
