Olympians lead Detroit past Ducks

Olympic champions Tomas Holmstrom and Henrik Zetterberg scored in a 46-second span in the first period and Chris Osgood made 24 saves for his second shutout of the season as the Detroit Red Wings shut out the Mighty Ducks at Anaheim, Calif., 2-0 on Wednesday night in National Hockey League play.

Holmstrom and Zetterberg were among five Detroit players who returned to the lineup after helping Sweden beat Finland in the gold-medal game Sunday in Turin, Italy. Nicklas Lidstrom, Mikael Samuelsson and Niklas Kronvall also played for Sweden.

Without the five Swedes, the Red Wings fell 5-1 at San Jose on Tuesday night.

Hurricanes 4, Bruins 3: Aaron Ward scored two goals – including the go-ahead score late in the third period – to lead Carolina past Boston Bruins at Raleigh, N.C.

Former Spokane Chief Ray Whitney and Oleg Tverdovsky added goals for Carolina, which leads the Eastern Conference with 84 points, and improved to 25-5-1 at home. It was the Hurricanes’ third win over Boston this season.

Devils 2, Flyers 1 (SO): At East Rutherford, N.J., Viktor Kozlov scored in regulation and added the only goal in a shootout for New Jersey in its win over Philadelphia.

Senators 4, Penguins 3: At Pittsburgh, Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley scored their 35th goals of the season and Ottawa built a four-goal lead before holding on to win.

Thrashers 4, Sabres 2: At Buffalo, N.Y., Kari Lehtonen made 34 saves, and Brad Larsen scored two goals for the winners in Atlanta’s fourth victory in its last five games.

Blackhawks 3, Predators 0: At Chicago, Craig Anderson made 20 saves for his first shutout of the season and defenseman Dustin Byfuglien scored in his first NHL game to lead Chicago.

Blues 4, Oilers 2: At Edmonton, Alberta, Curtis Sanford made 35 saves, and Scott Young scored two goals for St. Louis as it knocked off Edmonton.
