Persian music performance tonight

The Spokesman-Review

Iranian singer Mohammad Reza Shajarian headlines a performance by the Masters of Persian Music tonight at the University of Idaho.

Shajarian, who began his recording career in the 1960s at age 18, has been a leader in the Persian classical music renaissance that followed the 1979 revolution.

He will be joined by composer Hossein Alizadeh, a master of the tar (plucked lute); Kayhan Kalhor, who has performed on the kamancheh (spike fiddle) alongside the Kronos Quartet and Yo-Yo Ma; and his son, singer and tombak (goblet drum) player Homayoun Shajarian.

They received Grammy nominations in 2003 and 2005 for their albums “Without You” and “Faryad.”

Tonight’s concert begins at 8 in the UI Auditorium on the Moscow campus. Tickets are $8 to $18, through the UI ticket office (208-885-7212) and TicketsWest outlets (325-SEAT, 800-325-SEAT, www.ticketswest.com).

The group also will offer free discussions of Persian musical traditions today at 4 p.m. at the Kenworthy Theater in downtown Moscow, and Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Room 116 of UI’s Hampton School of Music.
