Barfield powers Padres past Mariners
PEORIA, Ariz. – Josh Barfield made a strong impression Sunday in his bid to become the San Diego Padres’ second baseman.
The son of former AL home-run champ Jesse Barfield hit a tiebreaking three-run double in the sixth inning of a 13-7 win over the Seattle Mariners.
“Barfield’s swinging well,” Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. “That’s what you want to see from a rookie. He’s out there competing for a job, so I’m sure there’s a little pressure on him. But he’s handled it well.”
The 23-year-old Barfield added an RBI double in a six-run seventh. He hit .308 with 15 homers and 72 RBIs in 137 games at Triple-A Portland last season.
Seattle pitchers have allowed 45 runs and 55 hits in three games, all losses.
“It’s the same old record and I’m getting tired of playing it,” Mariners manager Mike Hargrove said. “It’s still early. We’ve got to keep telling ourselves that. But there comes to a point in time where that excuse no longer works.”
Left-hander Jarrod Washburn made his spring training debut for the Mariners and gave up one run, two hits and two walks in two innings.
“It felt good to get it out of the way,” he said. “I haven’t really starting throwing any breaking balls yet. I just went out there and threw fastballs and changeups.”
San Diego starter Dewon Brazelton pitched two hitless innings.
