District I basketball stars play Friday at Mullan

The 21st annual District I All-Star high school basketball games, featuring the top senior boys and girls in North Idaho, will be held Friday at the Mullan Athletic Pavilion.

The girls game tips off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at about 7:45. Three-point shooting contests will be held at halftime of the boys and girls games and the boys will have a slam-dunk contest. A $100 scholarship will be awarded to the most valuable player in each game.

U.S. Highway 95 is used as the general dividing line between the East and West teams to balance out the talent.

Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for students and $3 for children 10 and under. Senior citizens 62 years and older will be admitted free.

Here are the rosters:

Girls East: Alyssa Weingart, Jordan Budd and Sue James, all Kellogg; Beverly Hammond, Mullan; Becky Mathewson, Post Falls; Jennifer Youngwirth, Bonners Ferry; Staci Hinsz, Shala Wild and Heather Dechand, all Wallace; Tammi Hendricks and Nikita Amy, both Kootenai; Bridgitt Bohannon and Brigitte Boucher, both Lakeland. Coaches are Kirby Krulitz and Steve Bourgard of Kellogg.

Girls West: Brittany Smith and Hailey Yount, both Priest River; Wynonna Johnson and Krystal Stockdale, both Lakeside; Rashall Trunnell and Tiffany Van Buren, both Clark Fork; Diana Leblanc, Alisha Puckett and Lynsie Powers, all Timbelake; Ashleigh Mire, Kendal Burt, Emily Taylor and Amanda Swerin, all Sandpoint; and Emily Bishop, Post Falls Christian. Coach is Kevin Rouse of PFC.

Boys East: Matt Kilbourne, Jacob Kagarise and Jacob Conboy, all Kellogg; Matt Palmer and Cody Smith, both Coeur d’Alene; Ross Hartman, Wallace; Zach Deines, Dan Hamilton and Kyle Turpin, all Post Falls; Caleb Bell and Tucker Baker, both St. Maries; Phil Viebrock and Ryan Gallia, both Lakeland; Matt Rice and Kyle Behrens, both Bonners Ferry; Cory Pehan and Jesse James, both Mullan. Coach is Gordy Allured of Bonners Ferry.

Boys West: Matt Rouse, David Park, John Hutchins and Tim Laux, all PFC; Brad and Brett Bemis, Cory Kreighbaum and Jarom Taylor, all Lake City; Michael Brewer, Chase Lowther and Brian Shultz, all Sandpoint; Tyler Broggi and Brian Young, both Clark Fork; Brandon Barnes, Kootenai; and Zach Petersen, Priest River. Coach is Tim Mitchell of PFC.

All-IEL team

Lewiston senior wing Bo Gregg was named the Inland Empire League’s player of the year in a vote of the coaches.

Coeur d’Alene senior post Cody Smith was named the newcomer of the year. Lewiston coach Dave Cornelia, whose team finished third in the 5A state tournament, was named coach of the year.

Junior wing Nate Bligh of CdA, senior guard Ryan Gallia of Lakeland, senior post Brad Herrenbruck of Moscow, senior forward Cody Line of Moscow and junior guard Shane Moser of Lewiston were named to the first team.

Smith, Beau Blewett and Andrew Packwood of Lewiston, Kyle Turpin of Post Falls and Paul Wimer of Moscow were named to the second team.

Brandon Haas of Post Falls, Chase Lowther of Sandpoint, Ty Stoddard of Lake City, Spencer Pingel of Post Falls and Brian Shultz of Sandpoint were named honorable mention.
