Lakeside, Riverside both fall

YAKIMA – The typical Great Northern League boys basketball game this season featured low-scoring defensive battles.

The GNL teams at the State 2A tourney reflected that.

The inability to score with regularity Wednesday sent both GNL teams into the consolation bracket, as Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) and Riverside both lost close games at the SunDome when they couldn’t score late.

Grandview 54, Lakeside 49 (OT): The Eagles (15-8) certainly had their chances to spring the minor upset, as they were up most of the second half against third-ranked Grandview (21-4).

Lakeside led 42-39 after Jason Reeder’s free throw with 38.8 seconds left.

Grandview missed a 3-pointer on its next possession, tracked down the offensive rebound and, with 14 seconds left, 5-foot-7 sophomore C.J. Lopez drained an open 3-pointer to tie the game.

Lakeside missed on its final possession, setting up OT.

The Greyhounds scored the first six points of the extra period, then hung on despite a technical foul, 8-for-16 foul shooting and CWAC South MVP James Vela fouling out midway through the fourth.

Lakeside couldn’t buy a basket, hitting 5 of 27 shots in the second half and overtime.

“We’ve got to shoot better than that,” Eagles coach David Pratt said. “We are better than that. It’s tough to take.”

Lakeside plays Steilacoom (17-9) in a loser-out game today at 9 a.m.

East Valley (Yakima) 45, Riverside 40: Riverside did everything it had to on defense, using a 1-3-1 zone and man-to-man to keep the Red Devils (15-9) to 36.4 shooting from the field and one 3-pointer.

The Rams (15-10) did just enough on offense to keep up with EV in a back-and-forth game until the end of the third quarter, but the Red Devils pulled into a 33-27 lead.

While leading 39-34 late in the fourth, EV missed the front end of three consecutive one-and-one opportunities, but Riverside couldn’t convert any into points.

The Rams finally got hot toward the end, and 3-pointers by Cody Stump and Adam Anderson made it 43-40 with 14 seconds left.

The Red Devils missed another front end, but 6-4 sophomore Kevin Komstadius grabbed the offensive rebound and hit two free throws for the last of his game-high 23 points.

Riverside will face Chelan in a loser-out game today at 2 p.m.
