Wizards knock off Pistons

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

If nothing else, the Washington Wizards can beat the Detroit Pistons.

For the second time this season, the Wizards broke out of a slump by beating the NBA’s top team. Gilbert Arenas scored 34 points and Caron Butler had 30 in Saturday night’s 110-92 victory over the Pistons in Washington.

The Wizards ended a five-game losing streak by beating Detroit in two overtimes on Nov. 25, and they are still the only Eastern Conference team with a road win over the Pistons. The Wizards ended a 1-5 slide and kept themselves from moving to less than .500.

Washington and Utah are the only teams with two victories over Detroit this season.

Clippers 106, Bucks 98: Chris Kaman and Elton Brand scored 22 points apiece to lead Los Angeles over the Bucks in Milwaukee.

Sam Cassell, in his return to Milwaukee, added 20 points for the Clippers, who used a late 11-2 run to take control.

Michael Redd led the Bucks with 31 points.

Mavericks 90, Jazz 87: Dirk Nowitzki scored 34 points, including 12 in a decisive stretch of the fourth quarter after Utah tied the game, and Dallas beat the Jazz in Salt Lake City.

Carlos Boozer capped a 10-2 run and tied the game at 71 before Nowitzki took control.

Suns 110, Timberwolves 102: Steve Nash tied his season high with 31 points and added 11 assists to lead the Suns past Minnesota in Phoenix.

Kevin Garnett had 28 points and 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who lost their fourth straight game.

Magic 103, Warriors 92: Hedo Turkoglu scored 21 points and tied his career high with 14 rebounds as the Magic beat Golden State in Orlando, Fla.

Derek Fisher led Golden State with 20 points and Troy Murphy added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Bulls 95, Hawks 90: Luol Deng scored 21 and set an early high-energy pace with his fast-break baskets, as Chicago jumped out on top early and held off the Hawks in Atlanta.

Chicago never trailed and held off a late comeback sparked by Al Harrington, who scored 32.

Bobcats 116, Knicks 109: Jumaine Jones scored 28 points to help the Bobcats beat New York in Charlotte, N.C., and edge ahead of the Knicks in the battle to avoid the worst record in the NBA.

The win moves Charlotte to 18-45, matching its win total from last year’s expansion season. New York dropped to 17-44.
