Thrashers rally late, beat Rangers

Ilya Kovalchuk scored the tying goal late in regulation, and Marc Savard netted the winner 2:45 into overtime as Atlanta earned a 3-2 comeback victory Sunday in New York that sent the Rangers to their fifth straight loss.

Both goals came on the power play that was 0 for 6 until Kovalchuk scored with 4:41 remaining in regulation. He then set up Savard’s 25th goal, a rising shot from the right circle.

New York, which lost 1-0 at Montreal on Saturday night, has scored just six goals in its longest skid of the season. The Rangers have earned just two points during the slide.

Senators 5, Capitals 2: At Washington, Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza each had a goal and two assists to help Ottawa beat Washington.

Avalanche 3, Flames 0: At Denver, Peter Budaj stopped 33 shots for his first career shutout as Colorado moved into first place in the Northwest Division with a win over Calgary.

Sabres 6, Bruins 2: At Buffalo, N.Y., Maxim Afinogenov scored on a penalty shot and added two assists to help Buffalo beat Boston.

Red Wings 5, Blackhawks 3: At Chicago, Pavel Datsyuk and Mathieu Schneider each had a goal and two assists as Detroit beat Chicago.

Wild 4, Oilers 3: At St. Paul, Minn., Brian Rolston and Pierre-Marc Bouchard combined for eight points as Minnesota beat Edmonton.

Penguins 2, Flyers 0: At Pittsburgh, rookie Colby Armstrong had a career-high two goals to lead Pittsburgh past Philadelphia.

Mighty Ducks 5, Coyotes 2: At Anaheim, Calif., Rob Niedermayer set up third-period goals by Samuel Pahlsson and Jeff Friesen to lead Anaheim past Phoenix.

Islanders dressing room damaged

The New York Islanders dressing room sustained severe damage when a sewage pipe burst at Nassau Coliseum.

Calling it “devastating”, the Islanders said that the team’s workout room was almost completely destroyed by flooding Saturday night as the arena hosted an ice show.
