Group show lands at William Grant
The William Grant Gallery in North Spokane is opening a group show Friday featuring the work of Laura Dahl, Marsha Marcuson, Dawn Hatchett, Shirley Bird Wright and Bob Swidergal.
Metalsmith Dahl of Nine Mile Falls is showing a new series of jewelry, purses and small treasure boxes. She incorporates metal, stones and other materials into her individually crafted pendants, earrings and pens. Each piece reflects themes of nature.
Marcuson paints in both oil and acrylic, producing works that range from representational street scenes to impressionistic landscapes.
Her choice of color often signals her mood, she says: “It is seldom an attempt to reflect the actual colors.”
Hatchett’s playful approach to making art is reflected in her painting technique of layering color and texture with brushes, her fingers and “whatever else I can get my hands on,” she says.
“I like free-form shapes paired with more ridged forms, written words and symbols,” she adds.
While Wright paints landscapes and florals, her favorite subjects are animals.
“She portrays the personality of a pet with great sensitivity and honesty,” says gallery manager Charlie Hinton in a news release. “Her wish is to make the world a little friendlier and brighter each day.”
Swidergal has been blowing hot glass for more than 20 years. He recently opened his studio, ARTesian Glassworks, in Valley, Wash.
“The excitement that decorative glass brings to our living spaces is what I look to share,” says Swidergal in his artist’s statement.
Meet the artists during a reception Friday between 5 and 8 p.m. at the gallery, 820 W. Francis Ave.
View the work through May 6. Regular hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; extended hours this weekend are Friday’s opening until 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Young Sandpoint artists
A “Student Art Exhibit” opens at the Pend Oreille Arts Council Gallery in Sandpoint on Friday with a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The multimedia exhibit will feature the work of art students from Sandpoint High School, Lake Pend Oreille High School, Priest River/Lamanna High School, Clark Fork middle and high schools and Sandpoint Middle School.
“We are amazed at the range of styles and media being explored by some of these students,” says exhibit coordinator Hali Karr in a news release.
The show runs through April 21. The POAC Gallery is located in the Power House at 120 E. Lake St. in Sandpoint. For more information, call (208) 263-6139 or see www.ArtinSandpoint.org.
GU’s ‘Student Paintings’
“Student Paintings from the Collection,” an exhibition showcasing the work of former Gonzaga University art students, opens Monday in the Arcade Gallery of the Jundt Art Museum.
“Student Paintings” features a selection of oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings from the university’s permanent art collection.
The items on display represent a variety of subject areas including still life, landscape, portraits and the figure.
There are paintings by Paula Favaro, Christian Helfrich, Anthony Jones, Katey Mandley-Brower, Rose Matthis, Michael Pace, Jodi Pomeroy, Doug Safranek, Tracy Stone, Pedro Surroca and Jihyun Yu.
Most, if not all, of the artists in the exhibit passed through the painting classes of Robert Gilmore, who has been teaching at Gonzaga since 1968.
“We’ve seen some exceptional talent here,” Gilmore says.
The free museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. The show is up through July 31. Call 323-6611 for more information.
Dukich’s ‘Similar Things’
“When a bunch of similar objects are displayed in one place, a kind of transformation can occur,” says artist Tom Dukich. “It might be perceptual as a previously unnoticed pattern and detail emerges.”
Dukich examines some of these “formerly unrecognized intentions” in his show “Similar Things in One Place,” opening Monday in the Huneke Gallery at the Spokane Art School.
“These are things that I’ve collected over the last several years,” he says, “and I just couldn’t seem to get them out of my head. Hence the show, to rid myself of these demon ideas.”
The work is up through April 14, with a reception April 7 from 5 to 7 p.m.
The free gallery, 920 N. Howard St., is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
