Get out, Get going

The Spokesman-Review

Green thumb weekend

The calendar finally says spring and the birds are back pecking in the yard, so it’s time to do a little cleaning in the garden. Pick up any leaves or twigs on the ground that might be left over from fall. If you left the remains of your perennial flowers in the garden, now is the time to trim the dead portions since some plants are beginning to grow back from their roots already.

It’s still too early to plant, but now is a good time to map out your garden and plan where to put new additions once the ground warms up. Any gardener can tell you that half the fun of having a garden is poring through the catalogs and planning a beautiful flower bed. You also can spend the afternoon in the gardening shed or garage, sharpening your tools for a new season. And it’s not too early to weed. The more you get now before they mature and go to seed, the less you’ll have to deal with later. Just make sure you don’t yank the tulips by accident. Happy digging!

The need for speed

If something has rpm’s and chrome, you can probably find it at this weekend’s Spokane Auto Boat Speed Show at the Spokane Fair and Expo Center. Motorcycles, custom hot rods, race cars – there’s a little bit of everything from someone who wants to wander through and drool – I mean, browse.

The show is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $14 for adults, $11 for seniors and $3 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 are free.

Gardening down under

Whoever named this week’s gardening discussion “Magic, Murder and the Weather – The Art of Not Gardening” deserves a few brownie points, if only for making us stop and take notice. The evening, sponsored by The Inland Empire Gardeners, will feature a presentation by Australian artist and gardener William Martin.

The discussion begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday at CenterPlace, 2426 N. Discovery Place. Admission is $10. Call 535-8434 for more information.
