Shock add former Sooner
The Spokane Shock have added veteran offensive specialist Antwone Savage to their arenafootball2 roster.
The Shock also placed lineman Matt Walters on long-term injured reserve.
Savage, 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds, spent the last two seasons in the af2 with the South Georgia Wildcats where he led the team in all-purpose yards with 1,549. Savage also led the team in receptions (87), receiving yards (1,070), and touchdowns (22).
Savage played his college ball at the University of Oklahoma, where he ranks second all-time in receptions and finished his career as a Sooner with 157 receptions, 2,009 yards, and 13 touchdowns. In both 2001 and 2002, Savage earned All-Big 12 honors.
Baseball
Freshman Ryan Weigand hit a pair of two-run doubles and had five RBIs, and Gonzaga scored 11 unanswered runs to defeat Dartmouth (2-8) 14-7 in a non-conference game at Avista Stadium.
The Bulldogs (15-10) broke a 7-all tie with a four-run seventh inning to win their home opener. Darin Holcomb (Shadle Park) hit a two-run double to spark the surge, then Weigand added another three batters later.
•Mike Van Winden, Chris Errecart and Josh Satin each hit doubles in the first inning to help California cruise to a 9-3 victory over Washington in the Pac-10 opener for both teams at Berkeley, Calif.
The Bears opened the game with three runs in the first, then took advantage of three Huskies errors to score three more in the seventh to break the game open. Zach Clem hit his eighth home run of the year for Washington.
•Danny Pecka (Mead) hit a single down the left-field line to score Todd Phillips in the bottom of the ninth inning as Whitworth rallied to defeat Bethany 9-8 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Merkel Field.
Phillips tied the game for the Pirates (10-10) earlier in the ninth with a single to right field that scored Mike Marlow (West Valley).
Whitworth had to rally again with a pair of final-inning runs in the nightcap, defeating Bethany (12-18) 6-5 in a seven-inning contest. Nick Froman tied the game with a solo home run, then Joel Clark (Mt. Spokane) hit a bases-loaded single to score pinch runner Rob Shields.
•Josh Waite had four hits, including a home run, and Edmonds scored eight runs in the fourth inning en route to an 11-9 victory over visiting Community Colleges of Spokane in a non-conference game.
Tyler Hauschild (West Valley) also went deep for the Tritons (8-7). Bryan Yardley hit 3 for 5 with three RBIs for the Sasquatch (4-11).
Softball
Sarah Froman had three hits and Kristin Hanson added three RBIs as Whitworth (10-8) defeated Vanguard 7-6 in eight innings to open a non-conference doubleheader at Costa Mesa, Calif.
In the nightcap, Rachel Bomgren and Erin Ladd each had three RBIs as the Lions (16-15) beat the Pirates 7-4. Froman went 3 for 3 for Whitworth.
•Lacey Parry had a two-run triple in the opener and four runs and two stolen bases in the second game as Community Colleges of Spokane (8-3) opened its Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges schedule with a 15-1, 17-7 sweep of Blue Mountain at Spokane Falls CC.
Stephanie Day (6-1) won both games, striking out eight of the 11 batters she faced in the opener before leaving with a sore shoulder. Jessica Miles had seven RBIs on the day, including a two-run homer in the opener. Amber Fowler and Amy Fitting homered for CCS in the second game.
Track and field
Washington State redshirt freshman Phil MacArthur (Selkirk) threw the hammer a personal-best and NCAA regional-qualifying 186 feet, 3 inches on the first day of the Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles.
Sophomore McKenzie Burgess Garberg had the fourth-longest women’s hammer throw in WSU history, setting a personal best and qualifying for regionals with a throw of 178-9.
Golf
Gonzaga sophomore Trevor Loe finish in a tie for 20th at the Cal Poly Intercollegiate men’s tournament in Arroyo Grande, Calif.
Gonzaga placed ninth in the 15-team, 54-hole tournament. Travis Bertoni of Cal Poly won medalist honors, and the Cal State Bakersfield team won by 14 strokes.
